The Denver Protests. Official Statement from DYD’s Executive Board:

To our Denver Young Democrats, to our fellow community members, to anyone who has been impacted by the news coming out over the past week... we hear you.

Our DYD members have been on the front lines of this week’s protests and have gotten to experience firsthand the same police brutality that we can only imagine our Black community members have had to endure their entire lives. We watched as peaceful protesters were met with rubber bullets and tear gas. We watched as leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement urged those causing violence to stop. We watched as some of our very own representatives failed us in meeting this moment.

George Floyd's murder is one of the many examples of our police system showing an egregious abuse of their powers, inevitably leading to an innocent person's death.

Enough. Is. Enough.

We are past the point of simply offering our solidarity with the Black community. We are demanding change now.

Just yesterday, State Representative Leslie Herod, along with Senate President Leroy Garcia, announced a series of bills aimed at holding police officers to a higher standard of accountability. We are encouraging all of our members to call upon their representatives to voice their support of these proposed bills.

We will not be silent, we will not just go away, we will always fight for our community members when their rights are being violated.

Signed,

The Denver Young Dems Executive Board
